The Poet At Matfield

If you're wandering through the idyllic Kent countryside and stumble upon The Poet At Matfield, you might just feel like you've discovered a secret gem hidden in plain sight. Nestled along Maidstone Road in the village of Matfield, this refined yet unpretentious restaurant blends heritage charm with modern culinary flair-ideal for anyone chasing after an unforgettable dining experience in Tonbridge.

From the outside, The Poet gives off a storybook kind of vibe, with its charming brick façade and cozy garden seating. Step inside, though, and you’re welcomed into a warm interior where old-world ambiance meets contemporary elegance. The crackling fireplace during cooler months is pure comfort, and in warmer weather, the outdoor seating offers countryside tranquility that’s hard to beat. It's the kind of place that feels upscale yet relaxed-perfect for solo diners looking for some peace, as well as couples on a cozy night out or friends gathering for a celebratory dinner.

Now let’s talk food-because that's where The Poet truly begins to recite its magic.

The menu here reads like a love letter to British cuisine, elevated with finesse. The Beef Wellington is one of those dishes that practically has a cult following. Perfectly cooked, with a golden, buttery puff pastry hugging tender beef and a rich mushroom duxelles, it delivers flavor that lingers long after the last bite. If you’re a fan of seafood, the scallops are seared to perfection-silky inside, lightly caramelized outside, often paired with fresh seasonal accents that change throughout the year.

Carnivores aren’t left wanting either. The Venison, when available, is a standout: rich, bold, and beautifully plated with thoughtful accompaniments. Looking for something classic? The Sirloin here doesn’t just hit the mark-it elevates it. Pair that with their triple-cooked chips, and you're in gourmet comfort food territory.

Sunday visitors, you’re in for a treat. The Sunday Roast is one of the area’s best-kept secrets. Whether you go for the roast beef or opt for chicken, it comes with all the trimmings-fluffy Yorkshire puddings, seasonal vegetables, and gravy that tastes like it’s been simmering for hours. Add a glass of Pinot Noir or even a celebratory Champagne, and your Sunday just leveled up.

Vegetarians aren’t just accommodated here-they’re celebrated. The falafel dish is unexpectedly delightful, with complex textures and flavors that prove meat-free doesn’t mean flavor-free. There’s also a vibrant selection of healthy options and indulgent mains that cater to a variety of dietary preferences without compromise.

Of course, a meal at The Poet wouldn’t be complete without a nod to the sweets. The Sticky Toffee Pudding is the star of the dessert menu-rich, moist, and swimming in velvety toffee sauce. For something lighter, the Amuse Bouche selections change seasonally and often surprise with their creativity.

The drinks list deserves its own round of applause. Whether it’s a perfectly balanced cocktail, a robust red from their great wine list, or a creamy coffee to finish the night, the offerings are curated with taste in mind. Their tea selection is also impressive, especially if you're lingering after dessert or enjoying an afternoon meal.

Accessibility-wise, there’s a wheelchair-accessible car park, seating, and toilet available, though the entrance might not be ideal for all. That said, the staff here are known for their attentive, accommodating service, so don’t hesitate to reach out ahead of your visit if you need extra support.

The atmosphere at The Poet At Matfield is elevated yet unpretentious, and that balance extends to every part of the experience-from the playlist humming softly in the background to the attentive servers who seem to know just when to appear and when to fade into the background. With its mix of comfort, quality, and quiet luxury, this is the kind of spot that turns a good meal into a memorable occasion.

Attended last night for birthday surprise and wasn't disappointed. The staff were very attentive throughout the evening. Head Chef Lee has created a menu which is a delight. The menu to make a decision which of the 5 starters & 6 mains to choice was extremely hard as I could and was tempted to have one of each. The food was as good as u can get the flavours were exquisite. The pairing of wine is a great idea. You will not be disappointed in booking here. Will be returning.

Our favourite spot in Kent! The Poet is consistently excellent: wonderful service, superb quality dishes The menu changes periodically depending on local produce availability, but is always exquisite, a real treat every time we go. I love that they offer a dog friendly table in the bar (if you ring ahead to book, and your doggo is well behaved) Garden is also lovely for a drink before/after food inside Highly recommend.

A spectacular experience! We came here for our 6th anniversary and could not have been happier. We have been fortunate enough to be able to eat at some of the finest restaurants in Kent and the food at The Poet is easily as good as any and the experience is better than most. Would 100% recommend regardless of the occasion.

The Sunday roast was delicious, the scallops starter and bergamot lemon curd mess were both unreal! Tom was so knowledgeable and had great recommendations.

Celebrated my 40th here and have no complaints. They catered for all 12 of us (including 3 children and someone requiring gluten free). Everything was excellent. A few around the table said the scallop starter and trout mains were the best cooked scallops and trout they’d ever had! We’ve been to a few Michelin star restaurants and this is as close as you can get without a star (imo)
